Pinterest is a virtual pin board. The idea is that when you are out surfing the internet and visiting blogs and you find something inspiring you can "pin" it to one of your pin boards.
Once you have joined pinterest (which requires an invite) you get a "pin it" bookmark to add to your bookmarks bar.
One tip is to be sure you are in the actual post, not the home page of the blog. You do this by clicking on the post title. You can tell you are in the right place by looking at the url.
When you find something you want to remember you click the "pin it" button in the bookmark bar. A selection of the images on the page will pop up. You can choose which image you want to pin. When you hover your mouse over the image a "pin this" button will appear.
When you click "pin this" a new window opens. You can choose which board you want to pin to and write a description of your pin. To finish your pin click "pin it." You now have a permanent link back to the image you wanted to remember.
Now when you want to find your pins later on, log into Pinterest. Here you can see my personal pinterest page with a few of my pin boards.
When I click on one of the boards, such as Favorite Layouts, I can begin to scroll through the inspiration I've pinned.
Pinterest has a social aspect as well. You can follow other people's pin boards. So if there is someone that inspires you (like Ali Edwards and Stacy Julian does for me) you can follow their pin boards. Then whenever they pin something you can see it and repin it if you'd like.
